Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is a 60m long bridge which is considered to be one of the two most famous bridges in London. It is located in the east of London by the Tower of London and it connects the two banks of the river Thames and their respective boroughs – the City of London and Tower Hamlets.

The construction of the bridge took 8 years. It was constructed in such a way that tall ships could sail underneath it. As follows, the construction consists of two parts which can be lifted. At its peak time, the bridge was the most sophisticated drawbridge in the world. It was solemnly opened in 1894. Tower Bridge consists of 42 1-meter-long towers which are connected both at the top and at the bottom. The bridge is built in the style of Victorian gothics and has a medieval façade. It is possible to cross it on foot for free or visit both towers for a fee and thus have a chance to view the exposition about the history of the bridge. A visit to the bridge’s tool room is included in the ticket price. The top of the bridge offers views of central London. Tower Bridge is often confused with London Bridge, which is a only kilometre away. However, London Bridge was constructed in the 70s and it is a simple concrete construction. By crossing Tower Bridge, one can reach the medieval fortress Tower of London. Its White Tower used to serve as a prison. The bridge can best be viewed from the port on the Thames, a short distance away from the Tower of London, or from Queen’s Walk, located by the townhall. In 2014, six panels of fortified glass were installed on one of the highest parts of the bridge. As a result, one can now stroll on a unique glass ceiling at the height of 42 m above the Thames. The Tower Hill Coach car park is located within a short distance from the bridge (50 Lower Thames Street).
